DISPERSED CAMPING AND PARKING

Motor vehicle use off of designated roads and trails for the purpose of dispersed camping is permitted on National Forest Lands for up to 300 feet from the centerline of the road or trail. Dispersed camping using non-motorized access is allowed throughout the Bitterroot National Forest, as long as resource damage does not occur.

Campsite selection must be completed by non- motorized means, and then accessed by the most direct route (no more than 300 feet) without causing resource damage (CFR 261.15) Cutting, damaging or harming (such as driving over) trees or vegetation is not allowed to access dispersed camping sites (CFR 261.15). Moving, going around, over, or past barriers on roads (e.g., gates, rocks, berms, signs, etc.) is not allowed (CFR 261.12).

Motor vehicle use off a forest road or trail for purposes of dispersed camping shall be at least 30 feet from a stream, wetland or other body of water. Camping adjacent to water sources is permitted; however, access must be by non-motorized means.

Motor vehicles may be parked up to 20 feet from the edge of the road surface when it is safe to do so without causing damage to NFS resources or facilities, unless prohibited by state law, a traffic sign, or an order (36 CFR261.54).

It is prohibited to operate any vehicle off National Forest System, State, or County roads in a manner which damages or unreasonably disturbs the land, wildlife. or vegetative resources (CFR 261.15 (h)).
