Get Premium AccessWhat is Dispersed Camping?
Dispersed camping, also known as boondocking or primitive camping, is camping outside of developed campgrounds on public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) or US Forest Service (USFS). Unlike traditional campgrounds, dispersed camping areas typically have no amenities like water, toilets, or hookups.
This style of camping offers a more primitive and adventurous experience, allowing you to truly get away from crowds and connect with nature. Most dispersed camping on BLM and USFS land is completely free, making it popular with budget-conscious campers, van lifers, and outdoor enthusiasts.
Dispersed camping is perfect for those seeking solitude, dark skies for stargazing, and authentic wilderness experiences. It's the ultimate way to explore America's public lands without the crowds and fees of developed campgrounds.
Dispersed Camping Rules & Guidelines
π Length of Stay
Most BLM and USFS lands have a 14-day limit for dispersed camping in any 30-day period. After 14 days, you must move at least 25 miles away. Always check local regulations as some areas have different limits.
π Distance Requirements
- β’ Camp at least 200 feet from water sources (lakes, streams, rivers)
- β’ Stay one vehicle length from roads (typically 150 feet)
- β’ Avoid camping in meadows or sensitive vegetation
π₯ Campfires
- β’ Use existing fire rings when available
- β’ Check for fire restrictions (common in summer months)
- β’ Never leave fires unattended
- β’ Fully extinguish before leaving
π― Leave No Trace
- β’ Pack out ALL trash (including toilet paper)
- β’ Bury human waste 6-8 inches deep, 200 feet from water
- β’ Leave campsites cleaner than you found them
- β’ Respect wildlife and don't feed animals

Dispersed Camping Tips for Beginners
πΊοΈ Finding Spots
Use the Dispersed app to discover dispersed camping areas with GPS coordinates. Look for existing sites marked by fire rings and cleared spaces. Arrive during daylight to scout for suitable spots.
π§ Water & Sanitation
Bring all water you'll need or have a filtration system. Pack a portable toilet or cat hole trowel for human waste disposal. Bring hand sanitizer and biodegradable soap.
π Power & Connectivity
Most dispersed sites have no cell service. Download offline maps before you go. Bring solar panels or extra batteries for power. Let someone know your plans and expected return.
π Vehicle Considerations
Many dispersed sites require high-clearance or 4WD vehicles. Check road conditions and your vehicle's capabilities. Don't risk getting stuck in remote areas. Start with easy-access sites first.
